Inspectors' Review:

  • Envelope is great for the Inspector to sit on

  • Be ready for pawrent to sprawl their papers across surfaces

  • Good paper for sniffing

  • Despite computer being warm and ready for our magnificence, the boss would not allow us to sit on the keyboard because "Queenie I need to use that for the game!" I disagree but what's a cat to do?

Boss' Review:

I came across Society of Curiosities on Instagram after finding a series of very curious photos. Upon investigation they announced they were revving up to release a mailed experience and I was intrigued to try it out!

The mailing arrives in a innocuous envelop but this hides the larger nature of the experience. The envelop includes curious maps, a letter, a couple articles but oh, boy did it not prepare me for the path I would travel. What sets Society of Curiosities apart for me is the seamless blending of texts, websites and documents to create a journey the players are actively involved in and contribute to. I felt quite a few moments of glee when I realized I was doing something I'd never done before or just having the freedom to explore a website that allowed me to click multiple tabs to read more instead of forcing me to only go to where the clue is.

This is a experience that relies heavily on internet access and your phone. I found this enjoyable. I ended up printing out things that I accessed because I prefer the physical paper but in many ways this experience is environmentally friendly The puzzles themselves varied with ciphers, maps, deduction, and plain old logic. These puzzles are fun and challenging. There were a couple times when I went "ohhhhh" when I realized the solution and I find that feeling most enjoyable.

The hint system is excellent and I found using it to verify some of my work (especially around the map) was extremely helpful. The owners are easy to communicate with and very helpful.

Overall, I enjoyed myself immensely and plan to subscribe to further experiences by them. I look forward to seeing more of their work and I recommend it to anyone who likes treasure hunting experiences!

The first episode was gifted to me but subsequent episodes have been paid for by me :) I bought the year's subscription after playing.
