Inspectors' Review:

  • The twig thingy thing was AWESOME! 4 out of 4 paws for batting capabilities.

  • Paper smells weird - amazing!

  • Boss didn't like us touching computer during game.

  • Cats in game were not nearly as regal as we are.

Boss' Review:

The Woods was the first season of an off-shoot supernatural mystery box game from the company Hunt A Killer. Overall I thoroughly enjoyed my experience and cannot wait to try another!

Note – I already wrote a review on The Mountain so any comments on customer service and such are there. For this review, I’m just focusing on puzzles and theme.

The premise of this game is that a woman, Grace, has sent you a letter begging for your assistance in uncovering what happened to her granddaughter and how to save her. This game has themes surrounding supernatural and witchcraft so be prepared to get into some sticky situations.

The puzzles for this game consist of ciphers (quite a few), hidden secrets, and activities to help uncover new elements to what are going on. There are components that get altered or destroyed so be aware of this information if you want to resell (there are ways to bypass but you have to be pretty careful and know what you’re looking for). I will say some of these puzzles are extremely well hidden and can easily be overlooked, even with a hint system. There were a few times I had to backtrack a few episodes because something I disregarded ended up being actually important later on. As such, make sure to take detailed notes for each episode! That said I thought the revelations that came with each puzzle were eerie and well situated in the unfolding of the narrative. Puzzles include paper elements, a few token items, but also digital components so make sure to have a fully charged or plugged into computer ready to go when you start! Also having access to a lighter and water is required if you want to full experience.

For the hint system – generally the puzzles are well hinted BUT there was some secrets not mentioned so make sure to fully inspect things! NOTE - since playing, HAK has been making changes to their hint site and facebook page to assist people.

The theme and narrative were really well done. The characters were well developed and you really understand their relationships with each other and the part they played. The pacing was balanced and the consequences of each action you make is present which I appreciated. You are not to take lightly what you are doing. The game was eerie and the documents included did a really good job in staging by showing the progression of a young girl trying to find her place while also struggling with external forces and the people around her trying to help her and the path that took them down. At the end of the game I felt satisfied with the conclusion and truly appreciated the experience.

Overall I truly enjoyed this experience. I loved the theme, the characters, and the mystery. In comparison to The Mountain, this one is much better (but that doesn’t mean the Mountain is bad, I still enjoyed it). The Woods has a better pace and its activities are more aligned with the game (the quizzes in the Mountain were HARD in some cases). In addition puzzles are better sign posted in the Woods, for the most part. If you love supernatural experiences and mystery subscriptions this is a great choice!
