Inspectors' Review:
After not letting us play the escape room, now you're letting us play...
Though, the paper is nice...
And the envelop!
You need our help to solve?? We just inspect them!
For example, there is a letter - I recommend starting there.
Don't ask me to read it! I'm illiterate because...well I'm a cat!
Boss' Review:
The Forgotten Letters of Elizabeth Van Leeuwenhart is a small epilogue/prequel puzzle game for those who had a chance to play the escape room (both in person or virtual) The Secrets of Eliza’s Heart by Logic Locks. I played the online escape room with friends and then ordered this mailed game from Etsy to play after the room. I really enjoyed the Secrets of Eliza’s Heart and recommend it if you like escape rooms!
This experience has very little narrative but essentially focuses on a special place Eliza visited prior to the escape room and you are learning about why she went there and what she did. This information adds to the escape room’s story but I would say it is not a standalone. The lack of a strong independent narrative means you require the information from the room to be able to create a cohesive story. Overall I thought it added to the overall story but I do wish there was more writing about Eliza and her feelings. Most writing pertained to clues and not a true explorer’s journal when you know why Eliza had come to this island. I will add the artwork with the letters were beautiful and really worked for the experience…also the envelope is gorgeous! These details are from Cryptogram Puzzle Post’s Jack Fallows who co-designed this experience for Logic Locks.
In terms of puzzles I really loved the puzzles here. They were quick to solve but well designed. Each page’s solution provides a clue to solve the next which gives you a place to start and follow. The solutions worked well in the story and sometimes I found looking at both pages together to solve worked as an excellent clue so I recommend laying them out in front of you to look at two at a time. The puzzles deal with ciphers, deduction, pattern recognition, and more. It is all paper and I recommend writing on the puzzles themselves to make things easier as you move onto the later puzzles (or scan copies if you prefer). I want to reiterate this will be a quick succession of puzzles (ie. 30 minutes) but they really work well playing off each other to nudge you along.
For customer service my game had a few issues. First, the game was late for arrival. They didn’t send it until a month after I ordered – this was after I messaged them. So when you order let them know by messaging them as well or even tell them after you finish The Secret’s of Eliza’s Heart so they are informed. Second, I believe a piece of the game ( a coin) was lost in the mail as a result of the think black envelope it was mailed in. My two other friends did receive their coins but as we played I found the coin was not essential (though as a collector I was slightly disappointed) and the beautiful inner envelope was safe. That said the game was 15$ so not too much money. I would message them prior to shipping to let know they need to double envelope the game.
Overall, for little prequel adventure to The Secrets of Eliza’s Heart I had a fun time solving these puzzles with friends. I highly recommend trying this out with friends after playing the escape room! It has nicely developed puzzles, looks great, and keeps the fun going from the escape room a little longer.
